Gordon Mehler concentrates his practice in the areas of white-collar criminal defense and federal civil litigation. (For an overview of the types of cases the firm has handled, click here.) He has more than 25 years of experience as a lawyer. This includes more than a dozen years as a federal prosecutor and more than a decade in private practice, as well as expertise accumulated as a Justice Department official in Washington, as an adjunct professor at Fordham University School of Law, and as lead author of a widely-used treatise on federal criminal practice. Mr. Mehler opened his law practice in 2000 after completing service as a Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Clinton Administration.
Prior to his Washington assignment, Mr. Mehler served as Chief of Special Prosecutions (now Public
Integrity), one of the two white-collar crime sections in the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern
District of New York. As an assistant United States attorney, Mr. Mehler handled scores of federal
prosecutions, especially investigations and indictments involving allegations of fraud and corruption. Mr.
Mehler tried, as sole or lead counsel, more than two dozen cases to verdict, handled appeals that resulted in
approximately a dozen published opinions, and received the Justice Department's Director's Award for
Superior Performance as an Assistant United States Attorney. He also served as Eastern District Domestic
Terrorism Coordinator, and worked overseas as the Justice Department's Resident American Criminal Justice
Advisor to the Romanian government.
Mr. Mehler wrote Federal Criminal Practice: A Second Circuit Handbook (Lexis Nexis Matthew Bender 11th
ed. 2011) with two former colleagues: John Gleeson, now a federal district judge, and David James, a longtime
federal prosecutor. United States Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote the foreword
marking the book's tenth edition. Mr. Mehler is also one of four practitioner editors of New York Criminal
Practice (Lexis Nexis Matthew Bender 2d ed. 2005), a treatise on New York State criminal practice.
After receiving his law degree from New York University, Mr. Mehler was a law clerk to the Honorable Robert
H. McWilliams of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. He also worked as a litigation
associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom. Mr. Mehler was born and raised in Denver and
graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a degree in journalism. His articles and op-ed
essays on a variety of topics have appeared in a diverse range of periodicals that include The New York
Times, The American Lawyer, The Annals of Internal Medicine and many others. For samples of Mr. Mehler's
